Overcoming Loneliness with Scents

Overcoming Loneliness with Scents

Feelings of loneliness don’t just happen during the winter blues. It can affect you all year long. Feeling lonely, abandoned, deserted, and unsupported stem from three main physical body system imbalances.

One – the liver tends to be dehydrated and under-performing.

Two – the gut is unhappy and having trouble absorbing and processing nutrients leading to malabsorption.

Three – glandular system is distressed causing the thyroid, adrenals, hormones, blood sugar and neurotransmitters to be imbalanced. This is why loneliness seems worse during the menses or with hormone changes and anxiety is worse when blood sugar is off because of lack of protein.

Why do we feel Lonely?

During and after the pandemic, the rate of people feeling lonely escalated. What became more evident is that loneliness and anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure) was linked with poor sense of smell. People with anosmia (no sense of smell), reported more social isolation and displeasure that severely affected quality of life (source). Here we see the powerful role scent plays in mood, mindset, and quality of life.

Other contributors to loneliness in addition to decreased sense of smell include –

  • grief and loss of a family member, friend, job, social status, independence
  • hormonal imbalances
  • neurotransmitter imbalances
  • malabsorption (poor gut health & bowel irregularity)
  • physical, mental, and/or emotional trauma
  • isolation and being disconnected to a support system

How does feeling lonely affect overall health & wellbeing?

When you are sad, feel lonely, and depressed, it decreases your immune function ability and strength by over 50%. That is why when you are sad and down, you should watch a funny movie, not a sad one. It can feed into feeling unworthy, not good enough, defeated, and suppressed. Your appetite may change. Your bowels get sluggish. Your thyroid starts to go out of balance affecting your metabolism. Your liver gets sluggish. It causes the whole body to go out of balance.

In addition to the body feeling more sluggish, so does your mind. You have more mental chatter that keeps you in a downward spiral of emotions. This causes you to be unmotivated, have lack of focus, be more pessimistic, and feel hopeless. Smelling essential oils can improve your concentration and positive outlook, while inspiring hope.

How to shift your mindset

There are 3 great ways to shift your mindset from feeling lonely, to feeling connected.

  • Smell essential oils
  • Smell them while saying your affirmation
  • Be present and aware of the positive feelings that happen when you are smelling your essential oils and saying your affirmation.

this greater awareness gives you a tangible memory to hold onto and connect with anytime you feel down, lonely, defeated, and deserted.

Essential Oils Toolkit to Kit Loneliness

Smell your essential oils at least 3 times a day. This will give you small, repeated splashes of inspiration to reinforce positivity. The best way to choose the right essential oils is to do Olfactory Sensory Testing. This is a technique I created to get the most laser-focused physical and psychological support, simultaneously. When you learn how to interpret the scent meanings after an Olfactory Sensory Testing session, it can provide more meaningful insight as to why these emotions are occurring, where they are causing the most upheaval, and how to get them back into balance, quickly. You can learn more about this technique and get more formal training in our emotional healing methods at the JennScents Aromaversity.
