Interpreting Aromatherapy Responses: What Your Reactions Are Really Telling You

Interpreting Aromatherapy Responses: What Your Reactions Are Really Telling You

Ever smelled an essential oil and instantly loved it (or hated it)?
That reaction is more than personal preference. It’s a message from your body and emotions.

Your Nose Knows What You Need

When you inhale an aroma, the scent molecules travel directly to your limbic system – the part of your brain that processes emotion, memory, and motivation. This means your first reaction to a scent often reveals exactly what your body and emotions need right now.

If you like it, it means something. Whatever emotion that is tapping into, your body is open, receptive, and ready to assess and release.

If you don’t like it, that also means something – you are not open, receptive, and ready to assess and release it…YET.

Yet is the keyword because someday, you may be ready.

Listen as Jennifer dives deeper into this. Then keep reading for more tips and translations.

Positive Reactions: “I Love This!”

Smell an oil and rate it on a scale of 1 (worst) – 10 (best).

If you feel instantly drawn to an aroma, it may be because it offers the emotional or energetic state you’re craving. It is bringing into your awareness what is ready to be healed, and your receptivity to allow it to be released.

Example: You smell bergamot and rate it a 9. This tells me you are ready, willing, and able to release the culprits and energy keeping your anxiety high.

Life-Enhancing Tip: Incorporate scent therapy into your daily routine as an “emotional vitamin.” Connect to who you are and what you are ready to release each day. Small daily releases are what will keep your barrel from running over.

Negative Reactions: “I Can’t Stand This!”

A strong dislike doesn’t always mean “never use it.” Sometimes it’s a signal that:

  • A buried emotion is linked to that aroma – feel where it is connecting in your body to know where that emotion is hiding
  • Overstimulation of your nervous system
  • A part of you is resisting the emotion it’s meant to unlock – how high is your defensive wall?

Example: You smell frankincense and rate it a 2. This tells me you are not connected to yourself, you feel lost, confused about your purpose, and disconnected from your passion. At this time, you are not open, ready, willing, and able to release it…YET.

Life-Enhancing Tip: Revisit the scent later, or perhaps blend 1 drop in with other comforting oils to get you ready. Often, what you resist holds the greatest healing potential.

Physical Sensations: The Body Speaks

While using aromatherapy, you might notice tingling, warmth, chills, or a sudden breath release. Pay attention to this.

  • Tingling/Warmth: Energy is being unblocked
  • Deep Sighs/Yawns: Releases and nervous system regulation
  • Tears/Emotional Waves: Stored emotions moving through & being released

3 Steps to Interpret and Work With Aromatherapy Responses

  1. Observe Without Judgment: Notice the reaction and write it down – thoughts, feelings, emotions & memories.
  2. Connect the Dots: Ask – “What’s happening in my life right now?” or “What emotion is this bringing up?”
  3. Integrate with Intention: Use the oil in gentle, supportive ways to help the body adapt and heal.

Why This Matters

The more fluent you become in interpreting your body’s aromatic language, the more precisely you can support emotional wellness, cognitive clarity, and energy alignment – for yourself and your clients.

You will be attuned to your needs, assess them more quickly, and recalibrate to a healthy state even quickly.

At JennScents Aromaversity, we teach you how to understand these responses and turn them into actionable healing steps.

It’s not just about choosing oils – it’s about understanding the why behind them.
