Holistic Solutions for IBS: Tackling the Root Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

In 2002 I got some pretty devastating news. My doctor told me that there was no more he could do for my IBS and Crohn’s disease. Of course, my first reaction was, “ok”.

Then, after a trip to the local herb shop to get some probiotics to just make me “feel better” with the time I had left, my mindset changed. The herbalist asked, “If they say you are going to die, why not try something that might work?” OMG. I hadn’t thought of that. But I was certain game to try anything at that point.

Hear my full health journey here.

Let’s dive into more insights into my journey of holistic solutions that worked for me.

IBS Isn’t Just in Your Head – It’s in Your Gut

I can’t tell you how often I was told, my symptoms were in my head. I knew that wasn’t true because I had physical pain, all the time.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common digestive disorders worldwide, yet it’s often misunderstood. If you’ve ever been told, “It’s just stress,” or handed medication to mask the symptoms, you’re not alone.

But here’s the truth: IBS is not just about managing flare-ups or surviving discomfort. It’s about understanding and addressing the root cause. By taking a holistic approach, you can reduce symptoms, restore balance, and feel better – naturally. For me, that took me merging my science and biology education with my psychology degree to truly understand the GUT and the BRAIN, together.

That’s the secret!

I want to dive in with you to talk about the root causes of IBS, how it affects the body and powerful holistic solutions you can use to tackle it, from the inside out and outside in. This double-sided approach will get you quicker, better results.

What is IBS and How Does it Affect the Body?

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that affects the way your brain and gut communicate. It impacts roughly 10-15% of the population (kids & adults) and presents. Symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Bloating and gas
  • Irregular bowel movements (diarrhea, constipation, or both) and sometimes accompanied with nausea

But here’s the hidden part: IBS doesn’t just affect digestion—it influences your emotional and physical well-being. When your gut is in disarray, your neurotransmitters and hormones can’t get where they need to go, causing moodiness, emotional instability, depression, anxiety, and anger.

  • The Gut-Brain Axis: IBS is intricately linked to stress and anxiety. The vagus nerve, which connects your gut and brain, amplifies gut symptoms when stress levels are high. Craniosacral therapy is a great resource to help bring balance and comfort. Adaptogenic herbs can help as well to bring balance to the nervous system.
  • Gut Microbiome Imbalance: Dysbiosis, or an imbalance in gut bacteria, can worsen IBS symptoms by increasing inflammation and disrupting digestion. That’s why probiotics, enzymes, omegas, and minerals are so important.
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome: Many people with IBS also experience intestinal permeability, where the gut lining becomes compromised and allows toxins to enter the bloodstream.

Understanding these underlying factors helps us address IBS at its root, not just cover up the symptoms.

Where Conventional Treatments Fall Short

Many conventional IBS treatments focus on symptom management, such as antispasmodics, laxatives, or dietary restrictions like FODMAP elimination. While these can bring temporary relief, they often fail to address the bigger picture and bring sustaining results:

  • What’s causing the gut to flare up? Find the triggers & culprits
  • Why is the gut-brain communication disrupted? Where is the point of miscommunication happening? Hint – it is usually at the liver-gut intersection. Something we discuss in great detail in the Advanced Holistic Gut Specialist Program.
  • How can we heal and restore the gut long-term? Start creating your holistic toolbox using the resources I provide in this article.

Masking symptoms without tackling the root cause can lead to frustration, dependency on medications, and ongoing discomfort. A holistic approach, on the other hand, looks at the full picture of health – gut, mind, body, spirit, and soul.

Holistic Solutions for Your IBS Toolbox: Addressing the Root Cause

To truly heal IBS, we need to support the gut, rebalance the microbiome, and strengthen the gut-brain axis. Also, there is always an emotional counterpart to physical symptoms that need assessing. Here are some holistic strategies I used to tackle my IBS naturally and effectively:

1. Aromatherapy for IBS Relief

Aromatherapy can calm the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and ease digestive discomfort.

  • Peppermint Essential Oil: Mentha x piperita
    • Physical: Proven to relieve abdominal pain and bloating in IBS patients (Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology).
    • Mental/Emotional: Helps when you feel confused, defeated, and closed-minded to healing (staying in victim mode).
    • How to use: Add a drop to a carrier oil and massage onto your abdomen or inhale before meals.
  • Roman Chamomile Essential Oil: Anthemis nobilis
    • Physical: Soothes gut inflammation, cramps, and bowel irregularity.
    • Mental/Emotional: Eases anxiety and anger that exacerbates IBS.
    • How to use: Diffuse during stressful moments or add to a relaxing bath.
  • Ginger Essential Oil: Zingiber officinalis
    • Physical: Reduces nausea and improves gut motility.
    • Mental/Emotional: Combats emotional fatigue and being emotionally cold.
    • How to use: Add to a warm compress and apply to your stomach.

2. Herbal Remedies to Soothe and Heal the Gut

Herbs provide powerful support for IBS by addressing inflammation, repairing the gut lining, and calming the digestive system.

  • Slippery Elm: Creates a protective coating in the gut, reducing irritation. (This is the main ingredient in my #1 herbal supplement formula that I’ve taken every day for 23 years, Intestinal Soothe & Build)
  • Fennel Seeds: Relieve bloating and gas by relaxing the intestinal muscles. It can be included in an herbal supplement, or you can drink fennel tea.
  • Licorice Root (DGL): Soothes inflammation and supports gut repair. Licorice also is amazing to support adrenal functions. Use caution with high blood pressure.

How to incorporate herbs: Drink them as teas, take them as supplements, or include them in cooking.

3. Probiotics and Prebiotics for a Balanced Microbiome

Restoring healthy gut bacteria is essential for managing IBS.

  • Probiotics: Choose strains like Bifidobacterium infantis or Lactobacillus plantarum, which have been shown to improve IBS symptoms.
  • Prebiotics: Support good bacteria with foods like asparagus, bananas, and garlic.
  • This is my all-time favorite Probiotic blend with everything you need.

4. Diet and Nutrition for IBS

Instead of focusing solely on elimination, emphasize nourishing your gut with healing foods:

  • Bone Broth: Rich in collagen and amino acids to repair the gut lining.
  • Fermented Foods: Include kimchi, sauerkraut, or kefir to introduce beneficial bacteria.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Add turmeric, ginger, and leafy greens to calm gut inflammation.
  • My favorite is to follow the Blood Type Diet (this saved my life, literally) and add in some of the Mediterranean Diet & Rainbow Diet.

5. Stress Management and Mind-Body Practices

The gut-brain connection plays a huge role in IBS. Managing stress can significantly reduce flare-ups and improve gut health.

  • Deep Breathing: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system to calm the gut-brain axis. Petitgrain, yuzu, and neroli are wonderful oils to sniff that also balance the entire nervous system, especially smelling while doing these breathing exercises.
  • Yoga for Digestion: Poses like Child’s Pose or Supine Twist stimulate digestion and reduce tension.
  • Meditation: Regular mindfulness practice lowers cortisol levels, easing IBS symptoms.
  • Hack: Add in aromatherapy while doing all these exercises to enhance the mind-body effects.

6. Flower Essences for Emotional Support

Emotions often play a big role in IBS symptoms. Flower essences can help manage stress, anxiety, and emotional triggers.

  • Distress Remedy: Calms the mind during stressful situations.
  • White Chestnut: Alleviates overthinking and mental clutter.
  • Aspen: Reduces fear and worry, which often exacerbates IBS.
